Randy Moss: An all-time mystery

As his career went on, opponents devised new coverages and exotic lineups in an attempt to slow down a unique physical specimen who referred to himself as "The Freak." Vikings offensive coaches often considered it a waste of time to scout their opponents' previous games because they never used traditional schemes against the Vikings when Moss was in the lineup.

Source: Donovan McNabb to Vikings

McNabb's arrival in Minnesota has been a rumored scenario for at least five years, ever since Brad Childress left the Philadelphia Eagles to take over the Vikings in 2006.

Childress is long gone now, but another former Eagles assistant -- new Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier -- helped make those rumors a reality on Wednesday, just in time for McNabb to help bridge the gap from Brett Favre to rookie Christian Ponder.

McNabb gives the Vikings a veteran quarterback while they groom Ponder, who was drafted 12th overall out of Florida State in April, to be the team's long-term answer at the position. The original preference for Frazier and the Vikings was to have Ponder start Week 1 in San Diego, with a capable veteran backup there just in case.

McKinnie is gone

Size is what helped Bryant McKinnie(notes) become a Pro Bowl offensive lineman for the Minnesota Vikings and the recipient of a 2006 contract extension that was close to $50 million. Size is what caused him to get cut by the team on Tuesday.

McKinnie showed up to Vikings training camp weighing nearly 400 pounds, 65 pounds above last season's official playing weight. Judd Zugland of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that McKinnie's girth was the "final straw" with the team. On Monday, the 31-year-old lineman was placed on the non-football injury list. The next day, he was gone.
